Dr. Harold Drutz is widely celebrated as the “father figure” of urogynecology in Canada, having pioneered the field of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) at the University of Toronto. Over a career spanning more than 50 years at Mount Sinai Hospital, he established the first specialized geriatric pelvic floor unit in the country and served as the only Canadian president of the International Urogynecological Association. Beyond his clinical and research contributions — which include over 140 major publications — his lasting legacy lies in his mentorship of 44 fellows who now lead academic programs worldwide, fundamentally shaping the modern landscape of women’s pelvic health.

Dr. Harvey is a distinguished figure in Canadian women’s health. Her clinical legacy is rooted in her specialized work with pelvic floor prolapse and urinary incontinence, but she is perhaps most influential for her research into childbirth-related trauma. Dr. Harvey has been a key advocate for evidence-based improvements in women’s healthcare, contributing extensively to peer-reviewed literature and textbooks on female pelvic health. As a long-standing Postgraduate Program Director, she has also played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of gynecologists through the implementation of competency-based medical education at Queen’s University. Dr. Farrell has a superlative record in Canadian urogynecology. He has demonstrated advocacy at a national level, through the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (where he served as one of the only urogynecologists in the position of president of the Society) and through the Canadian Society of Pelvic Medicine (also a past president). His trailblazing commitment to academic pelvic medicine and surgery, as well as advocacy and widespread continuing medical and surgical education, has inspired a whole generation of providers and elevated the status of our subspecialty for the ultimate benefit of patient care. In addition, his warm personality and individualized teaching style have made him a role model for many of the students who had the privilege of working with him. Beyond clinical and research excellence, Dr. Farrell is a strong innovator in medical devices, particularly to address stress urinary incontinence. He developed, patented and researched a low-risk, accessible conservative management option for urinary incontinence, the URESTA pessary — an over-the-counter, self-fitted pessary, offering women the autonomy of incontinence care while bypassing the long waitlists to access a urogynecologist. URESTA has been recognized as a significant innovation through several international awards and, more recently, an FDA authorization to distribute over the counter across the United States, following the Canadian model.

Dr. Baker is a prominent urogynecologist in Ottawa, recognized for his long-standing service and commitment to teaching. Dr. Baker was the first head of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital. His early practice included retropubic urethropexies and sacral colpopexies through a laparoscopic approach. Dr. Baker was instrumental in the Canadian introduction and adoption of tension-free vaginal tape, and trained generations of early career urogynecologists in its performance long before it became standard of care. Later, he performed vaginal reconstructive pelvic surgery that included the now extinct mesh repairs. With exceptional surgical versatility, Dr. Baker has experienced the full breadth of the subspecialty to date. His ability to navigate difficult cases with calm, quiet confidence and a steady hand inspired whole surgical teams and his trainees to remain focused and disciplined for optimal patient care. Among many remarkable accomplishments in his 35 years of tenure, Dr. Baker was most happy when training residents and fellows in the practice of surgery.
