‍Highlighted Project

Double-blind randomized controlled trial of Er: YAG vaginal laser to treat female stress urinary incontinence (PMID: 39603442).

Researchers from the University of Toronto conducted a CIHR-funded, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial evaluating Erbium-YAG vaginal laser therapy for female stress urinary incontinence, an increasingly used treatment whose efficacy remained uncertain. The study randomized 144 women and incorporated both objective measures of urinary leakage and validated patient-reported outcomes, with follow-up to six months. The investigators found that vaginal laser therapy did not provide greater improvement in stress urinary incontinence than sham treatment, providing important high-quality evidence to guide patients and clinicians. The study was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and was awarded Best Clinical Abstract at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the International Continence Society in 2023.

Current Studies, Investigations, and Projects

The Division’s research programme at the University of Toronto integrates basic science, clinical trials, surgical innovation, quality improvement and education. Key areas include pelvic organ prolapse, obstetric anal sphincter injuries, urinary incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis and nerve-sparing surgery.

We have many ongoing projects and have listed below some of our provincially-funded and locally-funded studies.

Projects

  • Lemos N - Diagnostic AI for Navigating Abdominopelvic Pain (DANA).  To develop an app in partnership between MSH, WCH and TMU - an artificial-intelligence platform designed to assist in the early identification and triage of patients with chronic pelvic pain and suspected endometriosis. By analyzing patient-reported symptoms and clinical narratives, the platform aims to guide patients toward appropriate specialty care and reduce the diagnostic delays that currently characterize these conditions.
  • Lemos N - Development of a novel MRI protocol to diagnose pudendal nerve and other intrapelvic entrapment neuropathies – Phase 2
  • McDermott C - The Visual Assessment of Vaginal Atrophy – valid, objective, observational measurement (VAVAvoom) Study: A correlation study between the visual assessment and objective measures of vaginal atrophy
