Research Spotlight

Saskatchewan Welcomes a Dedicated Clinic for Patients with Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIs):

Saskatchewan is thrilled to welcome Dr. Maria Giroux, who joined as a urogynecologist and an Assistant Professor in December 2024. Dr. Giroux completed residency training at the University of Saskatchewan and subspecialty training at the University of Toronto. She is currently collaborating on more than 10 academic projects and provides mentorship to learners in research. Her academic interests include obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIs), pelvic floor pain, and persistent postpartum pain (PPP). Dr. Giroux established the Centre for OASIs, which is a dedicated clinic with endoanal ultrasound for patients with OASIs, where she envisioned a novel longitudinal care model and conducts research in obstetrical trauma. The Centre for OASIs collaborates with the Saskatchewan Pelvic Floor Pathway, which is a publicly funded multidisciplinary program that provides care for women with pelvic floor disorders in Saskatchewan.

Special Research Interest in OASIs:

Saskatchewan’s urogynecology group has a special interest in OASIs. The Saskatchewan OASIs Care Pathway was designed in 2020 by a multidisciplinary OASIs Subcommittee, which included Dr. Corrine Jabs (co-chair), Dr. Maria Giroux (co-chair), Dr. Anita Harding, Dr. Rashmi Bhargava, Suzanne Funk, Leah Thorp, Karen Webb, and Amanda Dornstauder. This pathway focuses on prevention, patient and provider education, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and short-term and long-term management of OASIs.

Dr. Corrine Jabs and Dr. Maria Giroux are collaborating on academic activities in OASIs, which included a publication on implementation of Episcissors-60 for prevention of OASIs. Dr. Corrine Jabs, Dr. Maria Giroux, Dr. Anita Harding, Dr. Almereau Prollius, and Suzanne Funk presented a multidisciplinary hands-on session for repair of OASIs using pig bottoms in Regina and Saskatoon in January 2025. Dr. Giroux is the lead author of the upcoming Long-Term Management of OASIs SOGC guideline. She is also co-authoring the upcoming IUGA’s international OASIs guideline and the 2024 Short-Term Management of OASIs SOGC’s guideline. She is collaborating with IUGA’s Obstetric Pelvic Floor and Anal Sphincter Injuries Special Interest Group to advance obstetrical trauma patient and provider education nationally and internationally.

Other Areas of Research:

Dr. Corrine Jabs and Dr. Maria Giroux are collaborating on urogynecology research with pelvic health physiotherapists, Leslie Beck and Nadeane Nelson, and a women’s health nurse practitioner, Amanda Cameron, at the Saskatchewan’s Pelvic Floor Pathway. They are also conducting research in a novel nonoperative stretching technique for management of early postoperative urinary retention (POUR) after a midurethral sling procedure. Dr. Maria Giroux is currently collaborating with a medical artist in UK on a novel 3D model for patient education in pelvic floor disorders.

Saskatchewan’s urogynecology group also has a research interest in pelvic floor pain and collaborates with MIS colleagues. A multidisciplinary team that included Dr. Maria Giroux, Dr. Huse Kamencic, Dr. Rashmi Bhargava, and Suzanne Funk created a training program for teaching the assessment of pelvic floor musculature to identify a musculoskeletal cause, or contribution, to chronic pelvic pain. The video version was published as the monthly e-lecture at the IUGA Academy and the hands-on version was developed into a workshop that was presented nationally. This training program was promoted in Belgium at the pelvic floor birth trauma masterclass and the RCT was published in IUJ. The virtual version has 265,000 views from more than 100 countries and was presented locally, nationally, and internationally.

Fellowship Research Standards of Accreditation

Research Standards of Accreditation for Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Programs

The research standards of accreditation are a national set of standards maintained by the Canadian Society of Pelvic Medicine to guide the minimum standard of programming to support Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellows (PMRS) in completing a scholarly project as part of their fellowship. The standards are designed to uphold the quality of PMRS Fellowship research education provided across Canada and to ensure that PMRS fellowship programs adequately prepare fellows for academic practice.

The standards are intended to be read in conjunction with clinical standards of accreditation for PMRS fellowship.

  1. The curriculum plan includes each fellow’s participation in a scholarly research, quality improvement, or educational project
  2. The curriculum plan includes each fellow’s engagement in critical appraisal of relevant PMRS-related medical literature. This must include:
    1. Teaching regarding best practice in critical appraisal
    2. Regular opportunities to participate in critical appraisal of PMRS-related medical literature
  3. Fellows have access to and mentorship for a variety of scholarly opportunities including research
    1. There must be sufficient, competent individual supervisors to support fellow scholarly project activities, and these individuals must have sufficient capacity (protected time, for example) to supervise fellows
    2. There is a designated individual who facilitates the involvement of fellows in scholarly activities including research. This individual should report to the Fellowship Program Committee or equivalent
  4. Fellows have protected time to participate in scholarly activities including research

Mentorship Program

CSPM Research Mentorship Program

CSPM recognizes that developing a successful research program and establishing a research infrastructure are challenging and frequently even overwhelming tasks. On the other hand, many of CSPM’s accomplished members lead successful well-funded research programs and have an abundance of expertise that can be shared with novice researchers desiring more guidance. Therefore, CSPM has created its own Research Mentorship Program to help guide members through various stages of their research career.

Participants in this program will also have the opportunity to form practical and meaningful professional relationships. Mentors and mentees will engage in learner driven professional development sessions over a 12-month program.

This program uses a formal structure to support the formation of relationships that participants might not have been comfortable initiating informally. Each mentoring pair will define most aspects of their relationship, including the types of support the mentor is asked to provide to the mentee, the frequency of meetings and the desired learning outcomes for the mentee.

The R&D Committee will help match mentees to mentors. Both mentors and mentees will be recruited through a questionnaire that will help with the matching process. We will provide interested mentees with a list of potential mentors that each mentee can review with short biographies.  Each mentee will be asked to identify three potential mentors and why the mentee would like to match with them.  We are asking for the top three, to ensure that we can find a good match.

How to Participate

For Mentors: If you are interested in mentoring a junior colleague, please complete the form here to join our distinguished group of mentors.

For Mentees: If you are interested in becoming a Mentee, please complete the form here to join our program as a mentee.

You can download the Workbook on the Member Portal in December to access the resources and documents that you will need. Please also refer to the CSPM Mentorship Program Terms, which you will be expected to follow as a participant in the program.

Fellowship Programs

The CSPM Education Committee plays a vital role in shaping the future of pelvic medicine by supporting fellows and trainees nationwide. Through the
development of standardized objectives, a national curriculum, and a growing network of educational opportunities—including workshops, journal clubs,
and a fellowship matching program—we’re committed to advancing excellence in training and subspecialty recognition.
